Bender’s SWX Comp Rig at the Beach

I went out to Corona Del Mar Beach here in SoCal recently for a little test session with my comp rig.

    Brad,
    Great to see a “Bender” video again with Tool audio I have really missed your video postings it’s always been a leason for me to watch you drive. I’m still running a shafty with TLT axles. Some things don’t change still giving the MOAs as much run for thier money as I can but there are so many these days.
    I hope ypu doing well and are happy and healthy.
    Long live the shaft trucks it’s just more realistic.

    Hey,
    Will having a faster gear set in the front make the front and rear fight each other? or is it so little that it does not really effect the truck that much? Thanks for the help.

    1. Bender

      The ratio change front to rear is small enough not to hurt anything in the drivetrain. The overdrive front ring and pinion help on steep climbs by keeping the front tires spinning slightly faster then the rear, this also helps fight torque twist in a lot of situations.

      No real issues with the front and rear fighting each other. The difference in the 2 gear ratios is minor, bjust enough to keep the front end pulling faster then the rear.

    i would like to build this machine AWESOME see i dont know what the extras are built from or how would you suggest substitutes i can buy and will your whole list come up with a complete crawler or r there extra i would need

      You can pretty much replicate this rig with standard Axial hop-up parts. I have made a few custom mods, but nothing major. Our new RTC crawler is the perfect platform to start with, then you can add the SWX chassis and assorted parts over time as you see fit.

    Great video Bender!

    I love watching all your videos back to the SW2 on TLT’s! Your videos were some of the first I watched that got me into RC crawling, Having owned an SW2 myself i know how well they go. Currently I use a Aussie designed chassis but have been thinking about going upto the SWX.

    Just wanted to ask your advice on something, I am currently running Traxxas Ultra 100mm shocks with internal + external springs on my truck, I have a set of the new Axial adjustable 100mm shocks but cant quite seem to get them to work with my setup. What oil and springs are you using on your truck?

    1. Bender

      I’m running the stock springs that come with the new Axial comp shocks out front and on the right rear, looking at your truck from the back. I run a little stiffer spring on the left rear to help fight torque twist, it’s about 3.5 rating if I remember right. For shock oil I run 20wt in the front shocks, 35wt in the right rear and 45wt in the left rear. Hope that helps.

        I have thought about running thicker oil in the rear left but never tried it, I guess this answers some of my questions about it.

    that a nice crawler and how to you have your servo set to the side

      Thanks. The servo mount is something I made to fit this truck and keep the center of gravity as low as possible.

    hi i would like to know if ur wheels have breather holes in them . im working on getting all the produtcs to build a crawler just like the one in the above pics very stocked as right now running a mostly stock ax-10 thanks aaron

      I do have breather holes in my wheels. I usually drill two 1/8″ holes in each wheel about 180* from each other.

    Nice write up and video. I am putting together my third Axial crawler now. I left the world of full size crawlers in September when I sold Blue Torch but crawling is still in my blood.

    I have been having a blast with the Axials. My 8 yr old son and I have been having some heated competitions over the winter. I guess we need to start working on them a little. It is hard for be to show up at the hobby store with a stock crawler. Nothing I own tends to stay stock. LOL Keep up the good work guys. Bender nice work you are doing.

    Hello crawlers.
    How comes that the Mamba Max ESC is good for crawling??? Any custom firmware?
    Bender, three more shots for you:
    - I don’t get what’s the difference and the pros of that upper link mount on the rear axel if compared with the AX10 standard mount.
    - Have you ever tried the full drop setting on the shocks?
    - Any comments on your dig unit? Checking your clips, it seems to work ok. Any special comment or suggestion about using a dig?

    A huge “keep crawling” to everybody from Madrid… :)

    I just used a couple stock Axial body mounts bolted to the chassis in the rear. Then I mounted a single body post to a chassis standoff out front.
